Generational trauma is trauma that passes through multiple generations, beginning when a group or individual is exposed to a traumatic event that generates distress.
Research has demonstrated that generational trauma may cause psychological symptoms such as:
Depersonalization
Insufficient self-worth
Depression
Anxiety
Feelings of emotional numbness
Skill deficits (e.g., time management)
Symptoms of PTSD (e.g., social isolation, negative thinking patterns, loss of interest)
However, generational trauma may also cause physical symptoms, such as autoimmune diseases or frequent illness.
